REM is no more....

It's the end of an era for a lot of fans out there. REM has announced that they are disbanding after 30 years of making music together. I guess it's both surprising news and not surprising. You figure they survived this long together they'd pretty much keep going til they literally can't anymore. Still, after several decades you can easily see them deciding they've done all they can do and going their seperate ways. I was more of a casual myself (actually Losing My Religion and Stand drove me nuts back when they first came out and later grew on me) but here is one I always liked:

So what about you? Were you a big fan or a casual one? What was your favorite song and what do you think about the end of the band? Comment back and let's talk about it...

30 Day Song Challenge, Day 12

Well, I am now officially waiting to find out Hurricane Irene is going to hit us this week in SF and decided to go ahead and get some blogging done to try and get a couple posts scheduled for publishing over the next couple of days just in case. Today, I wanna go ahead and talk 30 Day Song Challenge!

Day 12 asks for a song that reminds you of your parent/parents. One song immediately came to mind. (Well, actually two! But this category was on another version of the challenge so I decided to use the new option.)

This song makes me think of my mom for a few reasons. One... Bon Jovi was her favorite band. Even as our relationship changed and got more difficult, that band was one thing we could agree on! Musical really does connect people and can transcend differences. We'd put the tapes on in the car and she even took me to see them live a couple of times. Secondly, this song was one she considered her song to me. She even got me to sing it with her in one of the kareoke booths at a local carnival when I was a kid. So what song would you pick for this? Comment back and let me know!

Before I sign out for the day, I wanna remind y'all of two contests I have going on right now. One is the Heather Hildenbrand giveaway where you can get a free copy of her ebook Dirty Blood. Another is the Levi Lowrey challenge. Be sure to enter asap.... time's running out!

Musical Philosophy.....

I'll be occasionally posting this feature where I pick a link or phrase from a song with a message. The first one is from Pat Benetar's "All Fired Up":

I believe there comes a time,
when everything just falls in line.
We live and learn from our mistakes,
the deepest cuts are healed by faith.

So what do you think of this line? Any of your own you'd like to share? Comment back and let me know... til next time!

Anvil: The Story of Anvil

So, not long ago I borrowed Anvil: The Story of Anvil from the local library to check it out. I'd been seeing the commercial for it for a long time but had not gotten around to it yet. It follows a band who came out about the time Metallica and many others were just getting started but never reached the same success. They, in fact, were a huge inspiration to Metallica and the others.

Blast From the Past Addition....

As I was looking up some clips and information about the show, I came across several links (including the show's wiki page) that mention the rights to Jem and the Holograms have been renewed so we may be seeing some new Jem merchandise out soon and maybe even a tv show or movie. I have to say that I am not sure how I feel about that. This was, afterall, one of my favorite shows. Part of the charm of Jem and other shows/movies from that era is they were so 80s. You can't really recapture what made an original show or movie great.... no matter how many times hollywood has tried over the past few years. I'm not saying never bring back any old show or movie period. I love watching the repeats- they bring back a lot of memories. All I am saying is let's try and come up with new. Let's do something different that future generations can look back on and remember fondly.

So let's go down memory lane... do you have a favorite episode or song from the show? Was there some other series that you loved? If so what was it? Share in the comments below! :)

Blast From the Past...

So I have been catching reruns of Jem lately on The Hub. It's a channel on DirecTV that plays a lot of 80's cartoon/kid's shows/sitcoms. They also have new version of some of these shows (like Tramsformers Prime). Here's the opener:

Being a huge music geek I used to love watching this in the mornings before school. I can't say much about the plotting/writing looking back on it, but still- lots of fun memories associated with this show. I remember they came out with dolls and most of them included tapes of the song. A Jem tape was, in fact, one of the first "real" tapes I ever bought with my own money. It included not only Jem songs, but hits from a bunch of 80's artists. Any other Jem and the Holograms fans out there? What other 80's shows did you love? Comment below- I'd love to read about them!
