CMTs Next Superstar

So, I had a chance to watch last night's debut and I enjoyed it for the most part. I think most of the contestants are great and the format worked well.

For those who didn't see it, last night's was kind of your typical first episode- it ran long and spent a lot of time introducing the contestants. After awhile, it switched to actual competition. What I really enjoyed (and like about the country music competitions in general) is they have various challenges. The first one was to take a pop/rock song and make it into a country song. They then performed the songs in front of an audience at the Wild Horse Saloon, who voted on their favorites. The two with the lowest votes were in danger of elimination. They, however, were given the chance to stick around by performing a 30-40 second bit of another song. After that, it was up to the judges to figure out who would stay and who would leave.

Then we get down to the part of the show I was less than pleased with. Each of the contestants in danger had to wait until the next day to find out if they would stick around. Not only that, they had to pack their stuff and meet the judges somewhere to find out their fate. The one the judges saved then returned to the mansion to unpack (again). I found that part just a little bit mean spirited... dragging out their suffering more for ratings.

As for the performances... most were great. I was, however, not impressed with the man who sang Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" and the girl who sang "Irreplaceable". While they tried to make it sound as though she were brave for picking that, I personally felt it was a "safe" choice given the fact Jennifer Nettles has performed it many times already. I really enjoyed the perfomance of "California Dreaming" and "Unwell" as well as another contestants rendition of "You're No Good". Did you check out the show? Comment with your favorites below! I leave you now with a video about the show. Enjoy!
