Deja Vu All Over Again

There's an old saying that says those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Unfortunately, the temptation of a built in audience is too great to shy away from remaking a popular series or movie... no matter how many times they have fallen flat. The new Knight Rider, anyone? And so we have the remake of Charlie's Angels that is in development at the moment. Assuming the pilot is picked up, this could be a series this fall.

I can't help but wonder exactly when the creativity left the entertainment industry. I guess it is much easier and safer to go with something that has an established name than it is to come out with something brand new. Still, what about the creative spirit? What about taking risks? If NBC didn't, there never would have been a Cosby Show, a Cheers... you get the picture. What if FOX had been too timid to air Married... with Children? These shows have become timeless classics that basically made their respective networks what they are today.

I personally gravitate towards shows that are a little different and I know many others out there that do as well (Thank you, cable tv!). I like them because they offer something no one else is. They take chances others won't and are all the better for it. I think it's time to shake things up and take a chance of some fresh ideas (and, no, I don't mean do a new legal drama, medical series or family sitcom featuring a brain dead husband, shrew wife and kids that should've been grounded about a hundred times over). So what are some of my favorite shows that are a little different? Stay tuned and find out....
