Martika Speaks and Kid's Inc.

Came across a great article about Martika (on twitter as MartikaTunes) and had to post for everyone. She was not only one of my favorite cast members of Kids, Inc., but one of my favorite pop stars as well. I think my favorite quote from the article is when she says that "If success doesn't overwhelm you, you don't appreciate it". Check her in action as Gloria... (and yes, that is little Fergie performing with her).

Life Imitates Art....

One of the best things about music, literature and cinema is how almost everyone can relate to it at one point or another. Sometimes you just feel the emotions even if you haven't personally been through a situation. Other times, you have been in those exact shoes.

Contests and Stuff....

So I decided to enter a cover song contest on youtube. It's for a channel called Sound Underground where artists upload their original songs. I chose this song to cover. Look up the original, too.... beautiful song!



In other news, been watching some reruns of some old favorites lately: The Golden Girls and In Living Color. Every time I hear either theme song, I go back to being a kid and laughing hysterically at Homie D. Clown and Miss Bonita. One of my favorite bits was the Dirty Dozens when Ed O'Neill guested as the grand champion. It's sad that there is nothing quite like this on TV any more.

The Golden Girls is another great example of that. There are very few casts, IMO, that were as perfect as the Girls. There really wasn't a weak link for me- everyone cracked me up. I especially love the mother/daughter relationship between Dorothy and Sophia.

Blast From the Past Addition....

As I was looking up some clips and information about the show, I came across several links (including the show's wiki page) that mention the rights to Jem and the Holograms have been renewed so we may be seeing some new Jem merchandise out soon and maybe even a tv show or movie. I have to say that I am not sure how I feel about that. This was, afterall, one of my favorite shows. Part of the charm of Jem and other shows/movies from that era is they were so 80s. You can't really recapture what made an original show or movie great.... no matter how many times hollywood has tried over the past few years. I'm not saying never bring back any old show or movie period. I love watching the repeats- they bring back a lot of memories. All I am saying is let's try and come up with new. Let's do something different that future generations can look back on and remember fondly.

Blast From the Past...

So I have been catching reruns of Jem lately on The Hub. It's a channel on DirecTV that plays a lot of 80's cartoon/kid's shows/sitcoms. They also have new version of some of these shows (like Tramsformers Prime). Here's the opener:



Being a huge music geek I used to love watching this in the mornings before school. I can't say much about the plotting/writing looking back on it, but still- lots of fun memories associated with this show. I remember they came out with dolls and most of them included tapes of the song. A Jem tape was, in fact, one of the first "real" tapes I ever bought with my own money. It included not only Jem songs, but hits from a bunch of 80's artists. Any other Jem and the Holograms fans out there? What other 80's shows did you love? Comment below- I'd love to read about them!
